Welcome to the Dutch national network for Citizen Science

Citizen Science Nederland (or CS-NL for short) aims to share knowledge, tools, and experience with Citizen Science as a practice; connect people and initiatives across the Netherlands; and continue to develop best practices and new initiatives. This beta version of the website is simple – but you can already find out more about the many types of Citizen Science initiatives in the Netherlands and the organisations behind them, as profiled on the EU-Citizen.Science platform:

Science + Society

Do it yourself – do it together! This network only comes to life with the contribution of everyone in the Netherlands engaged in participatory science from all walks of life – citizens, community leaders, educators, researchers, funders, policymakers, and anyone actively engaged in ‘Citizen Science’.

Local insight and knowledge →global impact

Informed by the data. Collaboration between scientific and societal actors is essential for solving urgent and complex scientific and social problems such as tackling the effects of climate change and improving our living environment.  We do this together – often with results that could not be achieved otherwise.

At home in all domains – from Archaeology to Zoology

In recent decades, the Netherlands has seen a lot of inspiring pioneering work with numerous individual projects – of all shapes and sizes and within numerous fields of science. These projects were initiated both by scientists and lay people or civil society organisations. By combining the knowledge and expertise in this network, we achieve even more together.

The National Programma Open Science (NPOS)

The very first national network for Citizen Science in the Netherlands is being set up by the Citizen Science Programme of the National Programme Open Science (NPOS), with funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). Within NPOS, organisations come together who are working at a national level to promote Open Science in the Netherlands.

Open Science Ambition 2030

The aim of NPOS2030 is to enable all national stakeholders to jointly transform science. The Netherlands is at the forefront of Open Science thanks to the efforts of individual NPOS stakeholders and their collective commitment under the NPOS banner. Building on this solid foundation, it is time to accelerate the transition towards our Open Science ambitions. To this end, the NPOS2030 Multi-Year Plan is being prepared, which includes the NPOS2030 Ambition Document and a Rolling Agenda.

Final Report of the NPOS Citizen Science Working Group

Citizen science is one of the programme lines in NPOS. The Citizen Science working group was created in 2020 to develop this programme. In their report ‘Knowledge and Forces Combined’, the working group gave substance and direction to the Dutch ambitions in the field of citizen science, and provided policymakers, initiators (both scientists and citizen scientists or civil society organisations) and financiers with 6 tools to promote citizen science. In doing so, the working group focuses on domain innovation, building on knowledge and expertise from home and abroad. The starting point was the workshop ‘Citizen Science in the Netherlands’ held on 22 February 2019 at the KNAW, at the initiative of the Dutch Young Academy. Policymakers and researchers, as well as representatives of civil society organisations and funding institutions participated in this workshop. The participants concluded that network development and quality promotion should be priorities, which explains the focus of this report.
